Silver grass in endless plains
Beautifully illuminated grass always makes a nice photo motif. Combine it with the reddish gravel soil of the Northern Cape area, the resulting contrast makes it stand out even more. (Augrabies National Park, South Africa, April 2011 - Image ID: 201104-ZA-10)
Lonely Quiver Tree
One of the few trees that survive in the dry and sunny climate of the Northern Cape is the Quiver Tree. Due to their unique shape they make a perfect model for every photographer. (Augrabies National Park, South Africa, April 2011 - Image ID: 201104-ZA-08)
Yellow flowers in Augrabies National Park
In some areas, fresh grass, shrubs and flowers add some colour to the otherwise rather rocky landscape. (Augrabies National Park, South Africa, April 2011 - Image ID: 201104-ZA-09)
Powerful Augrabies waterfall
Another attempt to catch the unbrindled power of the water masses falling down into the valley. After heavy rain, the river carried a lot of sediments, making the colour quite similar to the surrounding rocks. (Augrabies National Park, South Africa, April 2011 - Image ID: 201104-ZA-12)
Rock split by the powers of nature
A number of well-signed hiking trails allow visitors to explore the wild beauty of this remote area. Even large rocks crack into huge pieces due to the permanent exposure to sun, heat, cold, wind etc., creating amazing pieces of natural art (Augrabies National Park, South Africa, April 2011 - Image ID: 201104-ZA-07)
Augrabies Falls on the edge
In this case, a single photo doesn't really do justice to the power of the Oranje River dropping down into the ravine below the Augrabies Falls. A video clip shows it much better, but nothing beats the live experience. (Augrabies National Park, South Africa, April 2011 - Image ID: 201104-ZA-11)
Oranje River after passing the Augrabies Falls
After its 60 meters drop of the Augrabies Falls, the Oranje River makes its way through the vast plateau of the Northern Cape. Steep and colourful rock walls on both sides make it a spectacular view. (Augrabies National Park, South Africa, April 2011 - Image ID: 201104-ZA-04)
Dassie blossom lookout
This cute dassie seems to have its eyes firmly fixed on the yellow blossom of the nearby shrub. Whilst pretty close to the edge of the ravine, it seems inaccessible without risking its life. (Augrabies National Park, South Africa, April 2011 - Image ID: 201104-ZA-03)
Augrabies Falls with plenty of water
One needs to plan ahead, or be just lucky, to see the Oranje River dropping down the ravine with so much water. The sound of the roaring water can already be heard when approaching the Augrabies Falls. (Augrabies National Park, South Africa, April 2011 - Image ID: 201104-ZA-06)
Tuft of grass hideaway
Even in this very dry area of the Northern Cape, there is plenty of vegetation that manages to survive in this environment. And next to it, a mouse seems to have recently settled into its new home. (Augrabies National Park, South Africa, April 2011 - Image ID: 201104-ZA-01)
Three subwaterfalls dropping into the rocky ravine
Three smaller falls drops into the colourful ravine, just below the main part of the Augrabies Falls. (Augrabies National Park, South Africa, April 2011 - Image ID: 201104-ZA-05)
Tuft of grass in evening back-lighting
Another one of the many tufts of grass in the Northern Cape Region, this time beautifully illuminated by the warm late afternoon sun. (Augrabies National Park, South Africa, April 2011 - Image ID: 201104-ZA-02)

Taroko Gorge suspension bridge
One of the most beautiful bridges on the Central Cross-Island Highway near the Tianxiang Recreation Area. Whilst the river carried little water when we visited, during rainy and especially typhoon season, massive amounts of water run down the narrow gorge. (Taroko Gorge, Taiwan, March 2013 - Image ID: 201303-TW-15)
Tianfeng Pagoda
A landmark within the lush green of the slopes of the Taroko Gorge: the Tianfeng Pagoda. No matter if you driving up- or downhill, it is impossible to miss it - even at night when it is beautifully illuminated. (Taroko Gorge, Taiwan, March 2013 - Image ID: 201303-TW-16)
The final climb
The Central Cross-Island Highway isn't really a highway. It's rather a spectacular and narrow mountain road with countless tunnels, bridges and breathtaking views after every turn. The final ascent towards the summit is amongst the steepest parts of the journey. (Taroko Gorge, Taiwan, March 2013 - Image ID: 201303-TW-14)
Changchun Shrine and waterfall
This eyecatching shrine in an idyllic location is located in the lower part of the Taroko Gorge, and a popular tourist stop. Baiyang Trail suspension bridge
The Baiyang Hiking Trail is one of many spectacular options to enjoy the natural wild beauty of the Taroko National Park. A number of bridges and even tunnels provide access to smaller valleys with countless waterfalls. (Taroko Gorge, Taiwan, March 2013 - Image ID: 201303-TW-18)
Small waterfall on the Baiyang Trail
One of many, and yet standing out. A small waterfall dropping down the almost vertical rocky slopes into the lush green vegatation. (Taroko Gorge, Taiwan, March 2013 - Image ID: 201303-TW-19)
Tunnels deep inside Taroko Gorge
To make the extremely deep and steep gorge accessible to visitors, engineers had to drill a lot of tunnels into the marble rock. The Taroko Gorge is one of the most spectacular roads I have ever driven - breathtaking new views behind every corner. (Taroko Gorge, Taiwan, March 2013 - Image ID: 201303-TW-12)
Obstacle in flowing water
Always fascinating and beautiful to watch and to listen to: Mountain streams with lots of rocks diverting the flow of the cold water. But only with a long exposure photo, one can truly appreciate the contrast between movement and static obstacle. (Taroko Gorge, Taiwan, March 2013 - Image ID: 201303-TW-11)
Taroko Gorge river beauty
Cool water runs down between huge boulders against a backdrop of mountains with dense green vegetation. As a photographer, the Taroko Gorge offers hundreds of spots for scenic photo shots (Taroko Gorge, Taiwan, March 2013 - Image ID: 201303-TW-10)
Foggy spotllight tree
Such a relaxing and peaceful scene: a single tree standing out from the forst on a high mountain slope. The fog and the limited amount of available created an almost fairy-tale like scene. (Taroko Gorge, Taiwan, March 2013 - Image ID: 201303-TW-09)
Relaxation for body, mind and soul
Enjoying the breathtaking beauty of Taroko Gorge in style from the warm rooftop pool at Silks Place Taroko Hotel. Absolutely beautiful and so relaxing for body, mind and soul !!! (Taroko Gorge, Taiwan, March 2013 - Image ID: 201303-TW-13)
Foggy mountain pine
With bad weather and fog the Taroko Gorge develops a completely different kind of magic compared to sunny days. An almost mystical atmosphere with single trees sometimes standing out of the forest. (Taroko Gorge, Taiwan, March 2013 - Image ID: 201303-TW-08)

Half-open metal door bars
Another scene from the staircase inside the Ci'en Pagoda. Half-open blue metal bars mark the end of the descent before exiting the building. I liked both the shape and the colours. (Sun Moon Lake, Taiwan, March 2013 - Image ID: 201303-TW-05)

Timeless beauty, and so relaxing to just sit down and to watch and listen to the sound of the falling water. (Taipei, Taiwan, January 2013 - Image ID: 201302-TW-15)
Wulai Falls sakura blossoms
Taking close-up photos of cherry blossoms is very popular throughout Asia. Doing so in such a spectacular setting as the Wulai Falls gorge adds a little extra aspects to this morif, usually captured against a blue sky background. (Taipei, Taiwan, January 2013 - Image ID: 201301-TW-10)
Into the gorge...
Looking down, visitors enjoy a beautiful view of the bottom of the gorge with its clean turquoise water, constantly fed with supply dropping down from the forest area above. Simply relaxing and so beautiful. (Taipei, Taiwan, January 2013 - Image ID: 201301-TW-11)

About an hours drive from Taipei is the popular tourist attraction of the Wulai Falls. The water dropping into the steep rocky gorge with its lush sub-tropical rainforest green is absolutely beautiful (Taipei, Taiwan, January 2013 - Image ID: 201301-TW-09)
Yangmingshan crater fumes
Something special about Taipei is the close vicinity to both the sea and relatively high mountains. Yangmingshan is a popular recreation and hiking area for citizens, with vast grasslands, and some craters and fumeroles giving testimony of its volcanic origin. (Taipei City, Taiwan, February 2013 - Image ID: 201302-TW-08)

Lantern festival musicians
One integral part of the Festive Season are the lantern festivals. These exhibitions are extremely popular, resulting in huge crowds visiting them in the evenings. This huge rider on his horse seems to escape from the snake in the background. (Taipei City, Taiwan, February 2013 - Image ID: 201302-TW-13)
On the beach with a smile
This poor fish stranded and died on a sandy beach in the Tamsui area. Despite of this misfortune, it still seems to smile at everyone walking by. Somehow sad! (Taipei, Taiwan, January 2013 - Image ID: 201301-TW-06)
Waiting for customers
On weekends, these tables are usually very busy, packed with families enjoying food and drinks outdoors. Due to the bad weather, I found them completely empty... (Taipei, Taiwan, January 2013 - Image ID: 201301-TW-05)
Lover's Bridge
The fisherman's wharf in Tamsui is a popular weekend destination for families living in Taipei. Lot's of restaurants cater for the culinary needs of the visitors. One of the most popular spots for couples is the pink-coloured "Lover's Bridge", even on days with really bad weather. (Tamsui, Taiwan, January 2013 - Image ID: 201301-TW-04)
Bold architecture
One of the first places fto visit obviously was Taipei101, the cities main tourism attraction with its 101 floors. Putting such a high-rise skyscaper in a earthquake hazard area required innovative architectural solutions, with a gigantic metal pendulum installed inside the building. (Taipei, Taiwan, January 2013 - Image ID: 201301-TW-03)
Taipei City view from Maokong
Taking the Maokong gondola rewards visitors with spectacular view of Taipei. A striking contrast between the lush green forests and the 3mio+ population city. (Taipei, Taiwan, January 2013 - Image ID: 201301-TW-07)

Thr power of plants
Keeping your eyes open is often rewarded with unusual discoveries. I found this small plant growing out of a wooden pole at Huanshan 1914 Creative Park. Almost impossibe, and yet nature found its way... (Taipei City, Taiwan, February 2013 - Image ID: 201302-TW-07)
Red plastic chair rows
Year-round, the Liberty Square in the center of Taipei is used as a venue for many events. Whilst not the most comfortable seating, these chairs are waiting for the visitors to arrive. (Taipei, Taiwan, January 2013 - Image ID: 201301-TW-02)
City Wildlife
Even within the densly populated greater Taipei area, nature still has its places of refuge. Many public parks with lakes and ponds of all shapes and sizes provide home to a number of birds. (Taipei, Taiwan, January 2013 - Image ID: 201301-TW-01)
Symbolic pineapple presents
One of the most common and popular fruit year-round, but especially during New Year celebrations is the pineapple. It symbolizes wealth and prosperity, and presenting it to someone has this wish for the upcoming year attached symbolically. (Taipei City, Taiwan, February 2013 - Image ID: 201302-TW-03)
Yellow lanterns
Yellow and red are the dominating colours for the countless lanterns decorating temples, businesses and private homes. (Taipei City, Taiwan, February 2013 - Image ID: 201302-TW-02)
Red lanterns at night
Not much to say about these very decorative and almost romantic red lanterns. They are not limited to the Festive season, but obviously more common during winter months. (Taipei City, Taiwan, February 2013 - Image ID: 201302-TW-04)
Candles in the wind
During Chinese New Year, a lot more people than usual visit the large number of temples inside the metropolitan area, and pray for a good year ahead. Thousands of candles are lit every day, creating a very festive mood. (Taipei City, Taiwan, February 2013 - Image ID: 201302-TW-01)
Bike sharing and "Christmas" trees
Already 10 years ago, bike sharing was well established in Taipei, and (contrary to other parts of the world) unsually not subject to vandalism. The LED illumination of the trees in the city center made a nice colour contrast. (Taipei City, Taiwan, February 2013 - Image ID: 201302-TW-05)
The fire extinguisher couple
Whilst well protected with plastic bags on the sides, the dust on top of these two fire extinguishers clearly indicates that it has been some time since the last functional test. (Taipei City, Taiwan, February 2013 - Image ID: 201302-TW-06)
Autumn forest meets winter peak
Another spectacular view on our way towards the Southern slopes of Mount Etna. The mulit-coloured forest with its Autumn outfit creates a stunning contrast with the already frozen and snow-covered main peak. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-26)
Survivors: Trees regaining their territory
A nice example abouot the power of forests to recover from natural disasters. The first spruces reclaim their territory after a devastating lava stream destroyed all life in its path years ago. The snow-covered Mount Etna in the background surrounded by dark clouds adds to the dramatic atmosphere of the scenery. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-25)
Grass patches on black ash and red rocks
On its Southern slopes, Mount Etna shows a different face. Extended fields of colourful lava and ash are slowly being reconquered by grass and other vegetation. The contrasting colours and the blue sky are a true feast for the eyes. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-27)
Fumes from hell
When hiking on Volcano, it is important to check the wind direction, so that one doesn't get smoked in the stinky and potentially toxic fumes constantly evaporating from the otherwise quiet crater. Watching the flow of smoke above the yellow sulphor field is a fascinating spectacle. (Volcano Island, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-17)
Colourful Etna
Another view of Mount Etna from the touristically more developped South side on a beautiful December Sunday. The peak covered with fresh snow contrasts with the red rocks and beige grass at lower heights. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-14)
Sulphoric volcano fumes
Living on a volcanic island with constant fumes flowing out of the crater always reminds you about the currently sleeping powers of nature. I guess the inhabitants of the small village on Volcano have got used to it. (Volcano Island, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-16)
View over Volcano village and Lipari
The views from the top of the main crater on Volcano island are breathtaking. Looking North, the neighboring island of Lipari seems just a short distance away. So relaxing and beautiful! (Volcano Island, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-18)
Volcano main crater and Lipari
The hike up the main crater on the island of Volcano ("nomen est omen") is quite steep. As such, carrying up all the photo gear is a bit painful, but still worth the effort. Just sitting at the crater and enjoying the panoramic view over the Aeolian islands = pure joy. (Volcano Island, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-15)
Just an illusion
On the way hiking up the steep path towards the Volcano main crater, one is under the impression to reach the top where the red soil meets the blue sky. In reality, the walk is still quite a bit longer, yet very rewarding. (Volcano Island, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-19)
Mount Etna snowfield
After taking the cable car, we embarked for a longer walk in a winter wonderland at 2.500m above sea level. With a strong wind, it was quite chilly, despite the strong sunshine from a dark blue sky. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-12)
Etna tricolore
Three different surface colours of the same mountain against the background of a dark blue sky. A spectacular contrast creating a number of geometric shapes. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-11)
Snow groomer craters
The traces of the snow groomer (also used to carry tourists) lead towards two side craters of Mount Etna. We decided to rather walk this loop, and to enjoy the sunshine and the amazing scenery. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-13)
Peak in the valley
Another view from the North side, approaching Mount Etna. Whilst the snow-covered peak is a clear sign of winter, the forest still carries its colourful autumn outfit. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-09)
Grass patches on black lava
The south side of Mount Etna looks quite different, with extended lava fields, slowly reconquered by vegetation. On the peak, snow has replaced the black and red summer colours. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-10)
Autumn meets winter
The advantage of visiting the North side of Mount Etna in the morning is perfect sunlight illuminating the peak, and less clouds than in the afternoon. Visiting in early December was perfect to combine the snow-covered peak with the colourful autoum leaves of the forest in lower elevations. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-08)
Rust meets water
Sometimes the most simple things surprise you with the most amazing photo opportunities. I found this striking contrast between rusted metal and water while waiting for a ferry. (Sicily, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-20)
Mount Etna peak in dark clouds
"Bad" weather frequently creates exceptional photo opportunities. Compared to a clear blue sky, dark clouds result in a far more dramatic scenery. I took this image of the Etna main peak from the North side from Taormina. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-01)
Mazzaro blue hour chair
An off-season evening scene on the otherwise very busy beach of Isola Bella. Not sure who brought this chair here, but I was quite happy to have it as a photo model. (Mazzaro, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-21)
Don't give up!
Nature never does... A spectacular view of the snow-covered Mount Etna; a dramatic contrast to the dark lava field and the blue sky. A few spruces show the success of reforestation by nature, regaining it's territory after the complete destruction of all life in the area. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-05)
Birch family
A surprising sight around 2.000m above sea level: a forest of birches. Apparently they enjoy the fertile soil on top of a very old lava field. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-07)
Natural reforestation
After the previous devastation caused by the lava stream, a few small spruces have started to regain their previous territory. No man-made CO2 reduction reforestation project, but rather a natural evolution process. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-06)
Empty terrace lounge
During low season, the otherwise very crowded attractions tend to be quite empty, even on days with beautiful winter weather. This terrace on top of the coffee shop next to the Taormina amphittheatre offers outstanding views over the Mediterrenean. (Taormina, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-03)
The boot
Urban exploration in Taormina: the old city with its narrow lanes has a lot of details to discover. Like this boot-shaped area where the paint came off an otherwise colourful staircase. Do we need a painter or a shoemaker to fix this? (Taormina, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-04)
Taormina coastline reflections
The glass panels surrounding the coffee shop within the Taormina amphittheatre added a nice special effect to an otherwise pretty ordinary photo. Even though the coastline alone admittedly is quite pretty. (Taormina, Italy, December 2012 - Image ID: 202212-IT-02)
New life evolving from the ashes
A very symbolic picture! After the devastating destruction caused by the lava stream, only a few dead trees remained. Many years late, grass and even a number of young spruces are growing on the fertile ash. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-24)
Lonely trunk in a field of lava
Whereas most other trees in this area completely vanished when the hot lava made its way downhill, this one tree somehow stood strong. New vegetation has started to reconquer the black field of sharp volcanic rocks. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-23)
Not a chance...
Concrete and steel were not strong enough. Only a few remains of a former hotel remain visible amidst the once powerful lava stream that destroyed everything in its path during a previous eruption. A powerful reminder about the forces of nature. (Mount Etna, Italy, December 2022 - Image ID: 202212-IT-22)
Sand dune night magic
The huge sand dunes surrounding Swakopmund are an amazing landscape, which are best explored by quad bike, together with a local guide. Countless shapes and the wind-created wave patterns in the sand just blow you away. (Swakopmund area, Namibia, December 2007 - Image ID 202212-NA-04)
Deadvlei tree skeletons at night
Out of this world! The unreal scenery of the dead trees in the Deadvlei against the dark sky is probably one of the most spectacular locations I have ever been to... (Sossusvlei, Namibia, December 2007 - Image ID 202212-NA-08)
Untouched dune night waves
As much fun it may be to climb up these amazing huge red dunes in the Sossusvlei area, this is not good news for us photographers. Hence it's recommended to come early in the morning, and search for an unspoiled piece of art in the desert. What I particularly like about this image is the striking difference between the two sides of the dune. (Sossusvlei, Namibia, December 2012 - Image ID: 202212-NA-12)
Deadvlei trees and sand dune (photo painting)
To get into the famous Deadvlei, one needs to take a walk (at least when we visited, no vehicles were allowed to drive there). The breathtaking scenery is a well-deserved and abundant reward. (Sossusvlei, Namibia, December 2007 - Image ID 202212-NA-06)
Sossusvlei or Mars ?
This image could also have been created for a science fiction movie about conquering Mars. No need to travel so far. Our beautiful planet offers it all, like these breathtaking Namibian desert landscape. (Sossusvlei, Namibia, December 2007 - Image ID 202212-NA-10)
Red dune tree skeleton (photo painting)
Countless photos have been taken of the few dead trees in the Deadvlei, in most cases against the dark blue sky. I skipped that part for this image, and converted it into an expressionist-style photo painting (Sossusvlei, Namibia, December 2007 - Image ID 202212-NA-07)
Desert railway sleepers
A surprising discovery in the sand dunes: the remaining wooden railway sleepers create a mystical, historic and unreal scenery. Good for lots of photos… (Swakopmund area, Namibia, December 2007 - Image ID 202212-NA-03)
Deadvlei night mystery
The bright white soil pattern creates an unbelievable contrast to the coloured sand dunes and the sky above the desert. Taking lots of water is essential for any longer hike to explore this amazing area. (Sossusvlei, Namibia, December 2007 - Image ID 202212-NA-05)
Sossusvlei night dune (photo painting)
Impressive, no matter what kind of camera or posr-processing you use. The huge red dunes in the Sossusvlei always perform as landscape supermodel. (Sossusvlei, Namibia, December 2007 - Image ID 202212-NA-09)
Two boulders holding each other
The rock formations around "Spitzkoppe" seem to be from another planet. Stones, dry sand, leafless trees - quite a hostile environment, but at the same time absolutely fascinating. (Spitzkoppe, Namibia, December 2007 - Image ID 202212-NA-01)
Endless sea of sand (photo painting)
Taking an extended hike in the Sossusvlei, and climbing some dunes is quite exciting. At the same time, one starts thinking about those who had to cross an entire desert on foot without proper supplies, for whatever reason... Sand until the horizon, and then: more sand. (Sossusvlei, Namibia, December 2007 - Image ID 202212-NA-11)
Attention: Left curve (photo painting)
Just outside of Swakopmund, I found this street warning sign looking out behind the impressive yellow sand dunes. The rope leading into infinity and the white clouds in the dark blue sky completed the composition. (Swakopmund, Namibia, December 2007 - Image ID 202212-NA-02)
Siesta time
Shortly before our departure from South Africa, we revisited the lion breeding and conservation center. Once again, the youngsters were the main attraction, like this cub taking a short rest. (Ukuthula Conservation Center, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-17)
Angry elephants
Even though the ranger had stopped the game drive vehicle some time ago, the elephants clearly didn't enjoy our presence. This mother and its calf quickly approached and challenged us, before following the rest of the herd. (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-07)
Little paw
Just adorable: the paw from this lion cub is still small, but will grow together with its owner, and become a dangerous hunting weapon in the future. (Ukuthula Conservation Center, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-18)
Trouble ahead
Despite of having enjoyed a relaxing bath in the mud, these two rhinos seem to have an issue with each other. Standing head to head, their feet properly aligned and ready to attack indicantes some trouble ahead. (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-16)
Mudbath, together!
After a hot and dry day out in the bush, these two rhinos are having a blast, enjoying a rejuvenating mudbath together. Animal spa at its'best! (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-14)
Rhino outdoor spa
A group of rhinos wraps up a hot day in their animal spa. The refreshing mudbath also protects their skin against sun and insects. Collective happiness! (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-15)
Here I come
During a guided walk with two lions, we had the chance for close encounters with these still young predators. They ran around, disappeared in the high grass and bushes, or up on a tree, just to suddenly and quickly reappear. A quite unusual and somehow scary experience, for adults only. (Ukuthula Conservation Center, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-20)
Wrong species
Well, this tiger didn't really fit into the lion research and conservation center. However, walking through the high grass, this majestic animal was so beautiful that I had to take a few photos. (Ukuthula Conservation Center, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-19)
Lions don't climb trees !?
Whilst not as agile in climbing as leopards, lions can very well make a move up a tree. This one just quickly jumped up, took a look around and then came down as quickly as it went up. (Ukuthula Conservation Center, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-21)
Lion King
Impressive and beautiful at the same time: encounters with large male lions tends to create goosebumps. Especially when you have a chance to look him directly into the eyes, even from a safe distance. (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-08)
Deceptive tranquility
Looking at the pack of lions resting in the grass creates an impression of peace and tranquility. However, I was glad to sit in an offroad vehicle rather than "walking into them" by accident. (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-10)
The look
The golden fur was nicely shining in the afternoon sun whilst we observed a pack of lions resting in the high green grass. This lioness gave us quite a penetrating view. Hungry? (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-09
What a treat !
This buffalo seems to have the time of his life, or at least of the day. Cooling down in the refresting water of a small pond creates this special "Wow". An complimentary tooth-cleaning on top wouldn't hurt... (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-12)
Instead of soccer...
Whilst high-paid superstars play for glory, these two dung beetles struggle in their fight against gravity. Absolutely fun and impressive to watch how they manage to push the much bigger sphere in any terrain. (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-11)
Male buffalo rear view...
I somehow couldn't resist to take this photo. Not sure if this rear-view image of a huge buffalo would require a "nudity - warning"? (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-13)
Two horns
Guarded game reserves offer good protection for the endangered rhinos from poaching. Observing these huge herbivores feeding on the juicy grass is quite relaxing. The low-standing late-afternoon sun provided a beautiful warm light. (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-01)
Single-eyed leopard
Not sure what caused this leopard to loose its sight on the right eye. For predators, such injuries make it a lot more difficult to hunt successfully and to survive. (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-06)
Mother and child rearview
Even from behind, rhinos look as impressive as they are. These two were happily grazing, and didn't do me the favor to turn around. (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-05)
Grey Lourie
A fascinating feather-crown on its head makes this parrot-like bird a rather interesting sight. (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-04)
Sabi Sabi Evening Sky
Sunsets in Africa tend to be spectacularly beautiful. This one in the bushveld and forests of the game reserve made no exception. (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-02)
Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill
Bird-watching requires patience, or a certain amount of luck. In this case, it was the 2nd option that provided me with this unexpected photo opportunity. (Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve, South Africa, December 2012 - Image ID 201212-SA-03)
Playa del Carmen beach huts
Some of the first tourist accomodations in the nowadays busy city of Playa del Carmen were this kind of beach huts. Made from local natural resources, they blended nicely into the landscape with white sand and palmtrees. Some of them still exist today, alongside a lot of modern hotels and tourist resorts. (Riviera Maya, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-14)
Brain coral
Anybody else who still remembers taking your SLR underwater back in the 90s or early 2000s? Wrapped in a special solid plastic bag was the most affordable way to do it. Whilst not as professional, and hard to operate, I still think it was worth the effort to capture some of the amazing scenery below the waterline. (Riviera Maya, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-15)
Riviera Maya - 20 years ago
20 years ago, it was still relatively easy to find empty and natural dream spots on the Riviera Maya. Few visitors, endless sandy beaches, warm crystal clear water full of sealife, and lots of sunshine. With the continued "touristic development", nowadays many of these secret escapes are now part of hotel resorts. (Riviera Maya, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-13)
Cenote jungle exit
Located within lush and dense tropical forest, this is how an entry or exit into a cenote may look like. Most of them though need to be accessed via stairs, going down from the collapsed roof of a cave. Feels a bit like "Indiana Jones"... (Riviera Maya, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-12)
A quiet place
Despite of the excellent location, this inviting place with shade and lounge chairs was completely empty. Located in an amazing tropical bay with warm water with lots of fish, I assume it didn't take long for someone to occupy this spot. (Riviera Maya, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-07)
Orange cave
For me, one of the most fascinating activities in Yucatan is to explore some of the countless "cenotes". These underground caves filled with crystal-clear water are a paradise for divers and (some of them) also for snorcheling. (Riviera Maya, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-11)
Tulum Mayan ruins and beach
This image even better shows the spectacular location of the archeological site of Tulum. Very special! And the white sandy beaches and the warm waters of the Caribbean invite for a swim after exploring pre-hispanic history. (Tulum, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-10)
Palmtree sky
Not much to say about this view... (Riviera Maya, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-08)
El Castillo Tulum
With its unique location, overlooking the Caribbean sea, the archeological site of Tulum is something really special. The contrast of the light grey coral structures with the sky and the blue to turqoise water and the tropical vegetation is just breathtaking. (Tulum, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-09)
Hacienda Yaxcopoil beauty
With the henequen boom in the late 1800s/early 1900s, large Haciendas emerged in the area of Merida, Yucatan. Business collapsed during the economic crisis in the 1920s, and even more with the invention of synthetic fibers. Some Haciendas have been renovated and turned into luxury hotels. Others are open for day visitors, definitely worth a trip. (Merida, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-01)
Ravages of time
Maintaining the ancient Haciendas iin the tropical climate is a never-ending battle against time, humidity and vegetation. This combination creates interesting photo opportunities. (Merida, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-05)
Hacienda Yaxcopoil arches
The typical henequen Hacienda consisted of the Grand Manor House, the machine house, and a chapel. Covered patios protected against sun and rain. Exploring these once busy agricultural venues feels like travelling back in time. (Merida, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-02)
Have a break
Cleaning and cutting plants belongs to the ongoing tasks in any of the renovated Haciendas. Seems like whoever is in charge of this just took a break (or "siesta") (Merida, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-03)
Aged wooden lounge chair
Whilst maybe not the most comfortable of its kind, this lounge chair definitely enjoys a prime location. Overlooking a beautiful tropical bay, and just 1m away from the warm and crystal clear waters of the Riviera Maya, its age really doesn't matter. (Riviera Maya, Mexico, November 2002 - Image ID 200211-MX-06)

Good news for all fans of the black swan series: there are a few more pics available, taken a month later. Carefully guarded the youngster explore their pond and improve their swimming skills. (Centurion, South Africa, November 2012 - Image ID 201211-SA-01)

Threesome
Apart from the black swan family, other animals also call the small pond their home, and sometimes they get pretty close to each other. Yet, all very peaceful and relaxed. (Centurion, South Africa, November 2012 - Image ID 201211-SA-03)

Foreigner (I)
Remember! Each of us is a foreigner everywhere in the world, except for one (or maybe two) countries. This series of Autumn leaves illustrates how cultural and ethnical diversity add color to any society. (Esslingen, Germany, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-DE-01)

At Work (II)
There are definitely worse days at the office than this... Walking around World Heritage Site "Mont Saint Michel" during ebb tide with this kind of weather and relatively few tourists was absolute fun. (France, Mont Saint Michel, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-24)
Abbey mirror
During high tide, even part of the grasslands on the coastline are under water. As long as you don't mind getting your shoes (or feet) dirty, this provides unique photo opportunities. (France, Mont Saint Michel, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-30)
Yellow buoy
Tidal magnitudes in the bay of Mont Saint Michel are the highest in the whole of Europe. Whilst the flood make it an island when it reaches the high stone walls, ebb tide offers completely different impressions. (France, Mont Saint Michel, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-25)
U - sheep
Tranquil afternoon panarama with sheep feeding on the juicy grass surrounding Le Mont-Saint-Michel. The U-shaped ditch added this little extra to an otherwise sort of boring photo. (France, Mont Saint Michel, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-29)
Abbey silhouette
During ebb tide, one can basically walk around the Mont Saint Michel, and admire its' beauty and architecture from all directions. To do something different, I took this image directly into the afternoon sun. (France, Mont Saint Michel, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-27)
Tourist attraction - so what ?
Whilst the Unesco World Heritage Side can get quite busy even during low season, these sheep enjoy their afternoon feast. A very relaxing scenery... (France, Mont Saint Michel, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-28)
Sailing paradise
Autumn must be one of the best times for sailing enthusiasts to enjoy Brittany's spectacular coastline and pitoresque harbour cities. Relatively empty, reliable solid wind and pleasant temperatures make this part of France an excellent destination (France, Dinard, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-16)
Pink window veils
Bad weather is always a perfect opportunity to stroll around cities and villages, trying to find interesting details to photograph. Not sure about the motivitation or deeper meaning of this window decoration, but it definitely caught my attention. (France, Cancale, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-18)
Blue hour Saint Malo
Clashing with the usual restaurant dinner times in October, the blue hour is definitely worth making other eating plans. This peaceful evening scene of Saint Malo was captured from Dinard at the opposite side of the bay. (France, Saint Malo, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-17)
Red chairs
A beautfiul hiking trail leads from Basse Cancale to Pointe du Grouin. After every corner, interesting new views await ... (France, Basse Cancale, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-22)
Seagull portrait
Walking around the high city walls of Saint Malo, I spotted this seagull taking a rest in the afternoon sun. Fortunately, I quickly took a portrait snapshot with my iPhone, before another tourist chased her away. (France, Saint Malo, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-13)
Different Twins
Walking around Saint-Malo on its huge medieval stone wall provides excellent viewing opportunities, both overlooking the sea, as well as into the historic city. (France, Saint Malo, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-14)
Forbidden (II)
Whenever I go on my urban photo walks, I enjoy taking a whole series of images featuring the same topic. In the touristic coastal city of Cancale (oysters!), a number of colorful "No Parking" signs were almost asking to be captured. (France, Cancale, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-20)
Seawater swimming pool
A very pragmatic approach to create protected zones for swimmers that even work during ebb tide. Many cities in Brittany have this kind of natural saltwater pools. Water is replaced every 10 hours when the flood rises, and the pool disappears for some time. (France, Saint Malo, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-15)
Season's over
When visiting around mid October, the naval season was basically over. Sailboats, kayaks and surfboards were still lying on the beach, but operations will most likely only resume next summer. (France, Basse Cancale, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-23)
Just waves !
As kids, most of us spent endless time just sitting at a beach, and watching the waves rolling onto the shore. As busy adults, we tend to just walk by... Maybe time to rethink, take a rest and relax. Better than many TV programs! (France, Tregastel, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-07)
Broken heart
Even with bad weather, an extended hike along the rocky coastline near Plougrescent is worth the effort. Whilst most eyes are obviously focused on the sea and the waves, the spectacular rock formations also deserve our attention. (France, Plougrescant, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-06)
The Guardian
For good reasons, a very frequently photographed landmark on the pink granite coast in Brittany: the Ploumanac'h lighthouse. Whilst I didn't visit it in the morning, I guess late afternoon is probably the best time for amazing light and color contrasts (France, Ploumanac'h, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-09)
Pink granite only
Admittedly, a very well known photo motif: the lighthouse of Ploumanac'h. Made of the same material as the rocks it stands on, the late afternoon sun brings out the amazing colors. (France, Ploumanac'h, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-10)
Stranded...
The tides in Brittany come with quite impressive amplitudes, creating huge optical difference between ebb tide and flood. Walking around the smalll harbours comes with an abundance of photo opportunities. (France, Tregastel, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-02)
Perfectly aligned
Wind and water perfectly aligned all the small boats that anchored in the bay of Tregastel, creating a beautiful scene in the evening sun with the pink granite rocks. (France, Tregastel, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-11)
Evening Tranquility
Off-season is by default more quiet than the main holiday period, with many restaurants already closed for the season. This evening was particularly calm and relaxed (France, Tregastel, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-12)
Shelter
Whilst the strong wind continuously pushes the waves onto the rocky shores of Brittany, the small puddle lies absolutely calm behind a wall of pink granite rocks. (France, Plougrescant, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-05)
Enviable beach house
The advantage of travelling off-season are fairly empty stretches of coastline to walk on and to admire. In this part, several houses enjoy unbeatable prime beach locations (most likely acquired long time ago). (France, Tregastel, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-08)
Colleague at work
During mid- and low season, one can be lucky and have the beautiful beach all for yourself. In this case, another photographer had already set up his tripod and was busy capturing the amazing scenery. (France, Tregastel, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-04)
Double V
Another motif discovered during a stroll on the still wet (and muddy!) seabed during ebb tide. With lots of small boats resting in the harbour, there are obviously countless anchors and ropes volunteering as models. (France, Tregastel, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-03)
Ebb tide access
During low tide, one can easily walk over from Trebeurden to L'Ile Miliau. A short distance only, and already packed with spectacular views. (France, Trebeurden, October 2022 - Image ID 202210-FR-01)
Proud parent
Good news for all fans of the black swan couple: more family members are underway! Carefully protected by their parents, only the white feathers are clear evidence of their presence. (South Africa, Centurion, October 2012 - Image ID 201210-SA-06)
Swan Silhouette
The main attraction of the lake: Black swans are always an attractive photo model. This one perfectly posed in front of the bicolored light reflections of the lake. (South Africa, Centurion, October 2012 - Image ID 201210-SA-05)
Paddling circle
Swiming back towards me, this duck paddles in a small circle of greyish blue, a reflection from the sky above us. (South Africa, Centurion, October 2012 - Image ID 201210-SA-04)
201210-SA-03-i
Another abstract view of the standing water in a small lake, backlight by the low-standing afternoon sun. Just two colours, yet quite mesmerising. (South Africa, Centurion, October 2012 - Image ID 201210-SA-03)
Ducktales
Luckily, the small lake also host a number of regular tenants, such as these two ducks that enjoy their later afternoon swim in the warming sun. (South Africa, Centurion, October 2012 - Image ID 201210-SA-02)
Water clouds
Even though it doesn't look like: this is water in a small lake, backlight by the low-standing afternoon sun. I love the impression of a constant flow, whilst at the same time being a very relaxing and tranquil scene. (South Africa, Centurion, October 2012 - Image ID 201210-SA-01)
Together
One of the most colourful and fascinating, but also toxic mushrooms to be found in German forests. I took this image with these two 40 years ago with my first own camera, a Revueflex ACX.
Fallen
Not sure who or what caused this fly agaric to collapse, but it still made a descent job as a model.
Injured
Last image from my fly agarics series: this large one had been injured, but bravely and proudly still endured on the forest floor.
Evening Clouds (VI)
Sometimes it's good to be at home, so one can just quickly access the gear when nature provides an unexpected photo opportunity. This series was taken on a late Summer evening in August in Esslingen, and digitally enhanced for more dramatic colour & contrast. (Esslingen, Germany, August 2022 - Image ID 202208-DE-11)

LOVE !
Probably the most common link between human feelings and a colour: RED means LOVE. After an extended period of rain, I found this colorful gift just outside our house in Taipei. The original photo, before digital editing, was completely red, including the clay tile. (Esslingen, Germany, September 2022 - Image ID 202209-DE-01)
LIGHT !
As the brightest basic color, YELLOW logically is frequently associated with LIGHT. This wet leaf set against the dark black & white background ilearly llustrates this virtue. Original photo taken in Taiwan had red bricks as a background. (Esslingen, Germany, September 2022 - Image ID 202209-DE-02)
HOPE !
The colour GREEN is the one usually associated with HOPE. To illustrate this feeling (currently in very high demand), herewith another rain-inspired image from my time in Taipei. To enhance the effect, I turned everything except the main subject into black & white. (Esslingen, Germany, September 2022 - Image ID 202209-DE-03)
Red rocks and riverbed winter wonderland
A very special winter landscape: due to its high altitude, Lesotho can get quite a lot of seasonal snow. Combined with a dark blue sky and the clean fresh air, the vast mountain region becomes a very scenic destination. (Lesotho, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-LS-01)
Icicle curtain melting in the sun
Changing perspective! After taking a number of photos of the icicles covering the colourful boulders, I leaned against the rocks and captured the melting needles from below and behind. Small change in position, big change of the image. (Lesotho, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-LS-10)
Lesotho round house in snow-covered mountain area
Built entirely from local materials (stones, wood, grass), this typical hut can provide shelter even in Winter, even though it seemed uninhabited at the time of our visit. (Lesotho, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-LS-08)
Icicle waterfall on the rocks
Same location, different perspective. Instead of taking an image from behind the icicles, this overview shows the stunning beauty of the frozen waterfall in the Lesotho highlands. A temporary feast for the eyes... (Lesotho, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-LS-05)
Icy stream flowing through Lesotho's winter landscape
Another breathtaking view of a little stream, flowing peacefully in various curves through the higlhlands of Lesotho. With the entire landscape beautifully covered with fresh and clean snow, this place was just magic. (Lesotho, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-LS-03)
A wall of snow towards the dark blue sky
One of my favourite pics from this short trip into Lesotho: a step wall of snow including an overhang at the top. The bright white creates an extreme contrast with the ultra-dark and blue sky. (Lesotho, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-LS-02)
Typical rural Lesotho village in Winter
For the local people living at this altitude, winter weather conditions are pretty tough. This is how many villages in rural areas of this beautiful, but also very poor country look like, with theit traditional round houses. (Lesotho, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-LS-06)
Icicles melting in the powerful Lesotho highland sun
No matter how cold it may get during the Lesotho mountain nights, things quickly change as soon as the sun comes up. Enhanced by the clean air and high altitude, the magic of winter wonderland quickly starts to melt away. (Lesotho, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-LS-04)
Cows high mountain pasture feast
Cattle breeding and agriculture are an important part of most people's life in Lesotho. These cows have found a snow-free area with juicy grass to feed on, whereas the mountains in the background are fully covered with snow. (Lesotho, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-LS-07)
Vegetation in the fight with snow and ice
Even though Winter doesn't last long in Lesotho, it poses some challenges to local plants that need to survive the time they are covered with snow and ice. (Lesotho, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-LS-09)
Highland shelter in blue (abstract)
The final image from the short trip into Lesotho! Obviously, not a real "blue hour" capture, but rather a digitally composed and modified phantasy landscape. (Lesotho, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-LS-11)
Esslingen airstrip panorama at sunset (black and white)
After weeks of almost continuous sunshine during the day, one starts getting happy to see a few clouds, even though they actually didn't bring a lot of rain. On the positive side, the evening sunset over the small airstrip at Esslingen-Jägerhaus was very spectacular (Esslingen, Germany, August 2022 - Image ID: 202208-DE-05)
Golden Gate Highlands mountain range glowing red at sunset
Time to say good-bye to the Golden Gate Highlands. On the drive back to our lodge, the National Park once again spoiled us with a breathtaking scenery and spectacular sunset colours. (South Africa, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-SA-11)
Last rays of sunset illuminating snowy sandstone peaks
Just in time to still capture the last sunbeams of the day. The warm light strongly contrasts with the cold weather and the peaks of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, still covered with snow. (South Africa, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-SA-12)
Two-coloured sandstone cliffs in Golden Gate Highlands National
Very similar to the previous photo, just a slightly different perspective without the tree. Personally, I prefer this one, since it ensures full focus on the dramatic rugged sandstone formations in red and orange colours. (South Africa, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-SA-10)
Two-tone sandstone cliffs with tree and clouds
"Above us only sky" wouldn't properly describe this view, standing right at the bottom of the sandstone cliffs in Golden Gate Highlands. The small tree and the sky add some additional colours to the final composition. (South Africa, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-SA-09)
Cresent moon behind bushland mountain range
No, this moon has not been photoshop'ed into the image, it was really there! Whilst the sun was already warming up the area, the moon still had a quick view on us before disappearing behind the horizon. (South Africa, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-SA-08)
Golden stairway to heaven
The final stage of a beautiful day hike on small paths through the golden grasslands in the evening winter sun. As beautiful as it gets, with amazing views of snow-covered peaks and yellow-to-red sandstone formations. (South Africa, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-SA-07)
Lonely snowman in the golden grasslands
Unfortunately, not a lasting sculpture in this breathtaking landscape of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Build with the last remaining stains of snow, this cool representative of its species is doomed to melt away. (South Africa, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-SA-05)
Grassland valley in the snow-covered Golden Gate Highlands
The contrasting colours of the golden-brown grass, the bright white snow, and the deep blue sky were perfect ingredients for an extended photo session in this very peaceful and quiet place. (South Africa, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-SA-06)
Triple horizon landscape in Golden Gate Highlands National Park
Amazing contrasts and colours accompany us during our journeys and hikes in this not so well-known national park. Vast grasslands and pitoresque sandstone formations provide an ever-changing and beautiful scenery. (South Africa, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-SA-04)
Stunning sandstone formations and snow-covered peaks
One could easily fill an entire photo book with images of the different sandstone formations from the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Add some snow, and different weather/light conditions, it's a true photographers paradise. (South Africa, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-SA-03)
Golden sunset light illuminating sandstone arch
One of my personal favourites from this unique location! An amphit theater like cave, open on one side, facing the snow covered mountains. And the timing was just right for the warm golden light at sunset. (South Africa, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-SA-02)
Snowy footsteps leading towards the mountain range
The two pitches of snow almost look as if they were footsteps, showing hikers their way towards the red-coloured mountain range in the background. (South Africa, August 2012 - Image ID 201208-SA-01)
