Zooming in on a freshly snowed mountain ridge reveals the natural beauty of the area. A number of coniferous trees of different age and sizes provide some green contrast in the otherwise completely white landscape. A dark blue sky plus clean white snow in general already guarantee spectacular winter photos. And sometimes you are lucky and get one single bold color on top. Upon exiting the cable car at Austria's Arlberg region on skies, I found this eyecatching safety fence in bright orange color. Obviously, I couldn't resist to take a few shots. Whilst T-bar lifts are not the most popular and comfortable way to go back up on skies, they obviously are very common at every wintersport location. Most of the time, in high-mountain areas, they pass through bald open areas, so the journey is not interesting at all. Sometimes however, the track is build into a forest. With snow-covered trees, sunshine and a blue sky the trip can actually become quite pleasant. (Arlberg, Austria, March 1994 - Image ID: 199403-AU-04)

Whilst riding on a chairlift puts certain restrictions on properly composing an image, I couldn't resist to take this photo. The combination of white snow with patches of grass and some trees was just too beautiful. And abandonned and partially collapsed wooden cottage added another interesting detail to the early Spring landscape. (Silvretta, Austria, March 1994 - Image ID: 199403-AU-06)

When you go skiing in high mountain areas, the weather can change very fast. Sometimes, you enter the cablecar in rain and fog, and once you reach the summit, there is sunshine and blue sky. In this case, the sun was still busy burning some low-hanging clouds away, creating a very special light and atmosphere. The fresh snow, combined with the fir trees randomly distributed in the winter landscape, created a beautiful scenery. (Silvretta, Austria, March 1994 - Image ID: 199403-AU-01)

About this archive

The Austria archives contain a selection of images taken over the years in this European country.

Even though located just next to Germany, Austria in a place that I have not visited that often. The first trip was back in the 1980'ies far a school excursion to Vienna, with no images worthwile to publish here.

About a decade later however, I became a frequent visitor for a number of years. The reason for a number of trips, mostly on weekends, was quite simple: skiing! Being a late starter with wintersports, I was quite passionate about this for a few years. Especially the Arlberg region was easy to reach from Stuttgart, but I also explored other places like Montafon / Silvretta on downhill slopes.

The first images on this webpage are from the period. At that time, there were no action cameras, and to get great photos, I had to carry my camera gear under the skiing jacket. A little bit risky in case of falling, but I considered this worth the effort.

Later I also went into the Austrian Alps a few times during summer for hiking. Images of these leisure trips will also be featured here, showing the pristine beauty of the mountain areas.
